What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimisation Explained
AEO, answer engine optimisation, is structuring content so Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, voice assistants and ChatGPT use it as the answer.

AEO, or answer engine optimisation, is the practice of structuring your content so that search engines and AI assistants use it as the direct answer to a question. It covers Google’s featured snippets and People Also Ask boxes, Google AI Overviews, voice assistants such as Siri and Alexa, and AI chat tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot. Where SEO aims for a place in the list of links, AEO aims for the answer that sits above the list, or replaces it.
That distinction used to be a nice-to-have. It is now where a growing share of searches end. If someone asks “how long does a website redesign take?” and Google answers in an AI Overview, many of them never scroll to the links. The organisation quoted in that answer gets the attention. Everyone else is a citation at best.
Where answer engines show up
“Answer engine” is a loose term for any system that replies with an answer rather than a list of pages. In practice, the ones that matter for a UK business are:
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. The AI-written summary at the top of many Google searches, and Google’s conversational search mode, both of which cite sources.
- Featured snippets and People Also Ask. The older answer boxes, still common and still pulled from pages that answer cleanly.
- ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini. Chat tools that increasingly search the web before replying and link to the pages they use.
- Voice assistants. Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant read out one answer, usually lifted from a featured snippet or a trusted page.
The mechanics differ, but they reward the same thing: a page that answers a clear question clearly, comes from a source they trust, and can be read without fighting the page around it.
How AEO works in practice
AEO is not a trick. It is a way of writing and structuring pages that happens to suit machines and impatient people equally well. The work breaks down into five parts.
1. Find the questions
Start with the questions your buyers actually ask, not the keywords you wish they searched. Good sources are Google’s People Also Ask boxes, the searches that already trigger AI Overviews in your sector, your sales calls, your inbox and your own site search. A professional body might find “do I need to be a member to sit the exam?” asked a hundred times a month. That question deserves a page, or at least a clearly marked section.
2. Answer first
Put the answer in the first one or two sentences, in plain English, then add the detail, the evidence and the next step. This is the single biggest change most sites need. Pages written for old-style SEO tend to open with three paragraphs of context before they say anything. An answer engine looking for a quotable passage will skip that page for one that gets to the point.
Every answer should also stand on its own. AI tools lift passages out of pages, so “as mentioned above” or “this” with nothing before it breaks the answer. Name the subject in the sentence.
3. Structure the page around the questions
Use headings that mirror the questions, short paragraphs, numbered steps for processes and tables for comparisons. One page per cluster of related questions usually beats five thin pages that each answer a fragment.
4. Mark it up
Structured data tells machines what the page contains. FAQ schema for question-and-answer sections, HowTo for step-by-step guides, Service and Organization schema for who you are and what you sell. Google no longer shows FAQ rich results for most sites, but the markup still helps systems understand the page. The rule that matters: the schema must say the same thing as the visible page.
5. Make sure the machines can read it
Answers hidden behind scripts, tabs that only load on click, pages blocked to AI crawlers in robots.txt, and slow, broken sites all lose. Check that Googlebot and the AI crawlers you want, such as OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search and PerplexityBot, can reach and render the page. An llms.txt file is cheap to add and gives AI tools a clean summary of your site.
AEO, SEO and GEO
The three terms overlap, and the agencies selling them do not always help.
- SEO gets your pages ranked in the list of links. It is still the foundation: answer engines mostly pick from pages that are already trusted and indexed.
- AEO gets a specific page used as the answer to a specific question.
- GEO, generative engine optimisation, gets your organisation named and recommended when an AI writes its own answer from many sources, often without quoting any one page.
A useful way to hold it: AEO is about being quoted, GEO is about being recommended. We go into the differences in AEO vs SEO and GEO vs SEO.
What results look like
AEO is measurable if you decide what to measure before you start. Pick a fixed set of questions, then record each month whether you win the featured snippet, whether you are cited in the AI Overview, whether ChatGPT and Perplexity link to you, and how much traffic those sources send.
For Ali Legal, a London commercial law firm, we rebuilt the site with answer-first service pages and structured data on each one. Visits from Google AI Overviews went from none to around 455 a month in about six months, alongside roughly 1,350 organic visits a month. That is not a guarantee for anyone else, but it shows the work is real and trackable.
Where to start
If you do one thing this month, take the ten questions your team answers most often and check who Google and ChatGPT quote for each. Then rewrite the page that should be the answer so it answers in the first two sentences.
If you would rather we did it, our AEO service covers the research, the rewriting, the markup and the monthly tracking, and it runs alongside GEO and SEO in one retainer.
Questions about What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimisation Explained
What does AEO stand for?
AEO stands for answer engine optimisation (answer engine optimization in US spelling). It is the practice of structuring content so search engines and AI assistants use it as the direct answer to a question.
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. AEO builds on SEO. Most answer engines choose their answers from pages that are already crawlable, trusted and ranking reasonably well, so AEO without solid SEO rarely works. What AEO adds is question research, answer-first writing and structured data.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO is about a specific page being quoted as the answer to a specific question. GEO, generative engine optimisation, is about an organisation being named and recommended when an AI writes its own answer from several sources. They overlap and most organisations need both.
How do I know if AEO is working?
Track a fixed set of questions every month. Record whether your page wins the featured snippet, whether it is cited in the Google AI Overview, whether ChatGPT and Perplexity quote or link to it, and how many visits those sources send.
