GEO vs SEO: What Changes and What Stays the Same

GEO vs SEO compared side by side. Where generative engine optimisation and search engine optimisation overlap, where they differ, and what to do first.

Two overlapping dark grey discs on a black background, the area where they overlap filled with amber.

SEO gets your pages ranked in Google’s list of links. GEO, generative engine optimisation, gets your organisation named inside the answers that AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode write themselves. They share most of their foundations, so good SEO is the starting point for GEO. But GEO adds work SEO never covered, and measures success differently.

GEO vs SEO at a glance

SEO GEO
Goal Rank a page in the list of results Be named and recommended in an AI-written answer
Where it shows Google and Bing results pages ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews
Unit of success A page’s position for a keyword Your organisation’s mention, and how it is described, for a prompt
What drives it Relevance, links, technical health, content quality The same, plus entity consistency and third-party mentions AI tools trust
How it is measured Rankings, clicks, enquiries from organic search Share of mentions across a fixed prompt set, accuracy, AI referral visits
Timescale Three to six months for rankings that hold Weeks for retrieval-based answers, months for memory-based ones

What stays the same

The overlap is bigger than the GEO hype suggests.

  • Technical health. If crawlers cannot reach, render or trust your pages, neither Google nor an AI tool will use them.
  • Content that answers the question. Pages that are specific, accurate and useful win in both.
  • Authority. Links and mentions from relevant, respected sites help a page rank and help an AI trust the organisation behind it.
  • Structure. Clear headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables make a page easier for people, search engines and language models.

ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Google’s AI features all fetch web pages before they answer. If your page ranks well for the underlying search, it has a much better chance of being fetched and cited. That is why we treat SEO as the foundation of GEO rather than a separate discipline.

What changes

The unit is your organisation, not your page

SEO thinks in pages and keywords. GEO thinks in entities and prompts. The question is less “does this page rank for ‘AI agency UK’?” and more “when someone asks an assistant for a UK AI agency, is our organisation named, and is the description right?”

In SEO, a mention without a link does little. In GEO, an accurate mention in a source an AI tool trusts, such as a trade publication, a respected directory or a comparison article, can be what gets you named. Language models learn about organisations from everything written about them.

Consistency becomes a ranking factor

If your website says you were founded in 2024, your LinkedIn says 2023 and a directory lists an old address, a model has three versions of you and confidence in none. GEO includes cleaning up every public description of the organisation.

Writing for extraction

AI tools lift passages out of pages. A paragraph that starts “As we mentioned above, this is why it works” means nothing on its own. GEO-friendly writing names its subject, makes one point per paragraph and supports claims with specifics: numbers, dates, named sources.

Measurement is new

There is no Search Console for ChatGPT. You measure GEO by running a fixed set of buyer prompts through the main assistants every month and recording who is named. We explain how in how to measure AI search visibility.

Which should you do first?

  • The site has technical problems or ranks for almost nothing: fix SEO first. GEO built on a weak site rarely sticks.
  • The site ranks reasonably but never appears in AI answers: GEO is where the quick gains are. Start with an AI visibility audit and entity clean-up.
  • You are about to rebuild: build for both from the start. That is what we mean by an agentic website.

A note on the acronym

Some agencies use “GEO” to mean geographic targeting for ads. In AI search, it means generative engine optimisation. If an agency pitches GEO, ask which they mean.

Where AEO fits

AEO, answer engine optimisation, sits between the two: it makes a specific page the quoted answer to a specific question, in featured snippets, AI Overviews and voice search. If GEO is about being recommended, AEO is about being quoted. We compare it with SEO in AEO vs SEO.

We run SEO, AEO and GEO together in one retainer, because splitting them means three agencies doing overlapping work on the same pages.

Questions about GEO vs SEO: What Changes and What Stays the Same

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. Many AI tools search the web and pick their sources from pages that already rank, so SEO remains the foundation. GEO adds work on top of it, mainly entity consistency, third-party mentions and tracking what AI assistants say.

Which should a business do first, SEO or GEO?

If the site has technical problems or ranks for nothing, fix SEO first, because GEO depends on it. If the site already ranks but never appears in AI answers, GEO is where the gains are.

Can one page be optimised for both GEO and SEO?

Yes, and usually it should be. A page that answers clearly, cites evidence, uses descriptive headings and carries structured data serves Google rankings and AI answers at the same time.
