AEO vs SEO: What's the Difference, and Do You Need Both?
AEO vs SEO explained. SEO ranks your page in the results; AEO makes it the quoted answer in AI Overviews, snippets and voice search. When you need each.

SEO, search engine optimisation, earns your page a position in the list of search results. AEO, answer engine optimisation, earns your page the answer itself: the AI Overview, the featured snippet, the voice reply or the source ChatGPT quotes. Most organisations need both, because answer engines mostly choose from pages that already rank. AEO is the extra work that turns a ranking page into the quoted one.
AEO vs SEO at a glance
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Aim | Rank a page for a search | Be the direct answer to a question |
| Starts from | Keywords and search volume | The questions buyers ask, in their words |
| Page shape | Comprehensive pages on a topic | The answer in the first two sentences, then the detail |
| Key technical work | Crawlability, speed, links, internal linking | The same, plus FAQ, HowTo and Service schema and passages that stand alone |
| Win condition | Top positions, clicks, enquiries | Featured snippet, AI Overview citation, quoted by assistants |
| Measured by | Rankings and organic traffic | A fixed question set, tracked monthly across answer engines |
Why the difference matters now
For years, ranking first was enough. The click followed. Now Google answers many questions at the top of the page with an AI Overview, and people ask ChatGPT or Perplexity directly. A page can rank third and lose to the page the AI chose to quote, even if that page ranks lower.
AEO is the discipline of being the page that gets chosen. It does not replace SEO. It finishes the job.
What AEO adds to SEO
Question research instead of only keyword research
SEO keyword research tells you that “membership CRM integration” gets searched. AEO question research tells you people ask “how long does a membership CRM integration take?” and “what does a membership CRM integration cost?”. Each question needs a clear, quotable answer somewhere on your site.
Answer-first writing
The biggest practical change. Put the answer in the opening sentence or two, then expand. Pages written for older SEO habits bury the answer under context, and answer engines pass them over.
Passages that stand on their own
AI tools extract paragraphs. Write each one so it makes sense without the paragraph before it: name the subject, avoid “this” and “as above”, and include the specific number or fact the reader needs.
Schema that matches the page
FAQ, HowTo, Service and Organization structured data help machines understand what the page contains. It has to match the visible content exactly, or it does more harm than good.
When to focus on which
- You rank for very little: fix SEO first. Technical health and relevant content come before answer formatting.
- You rank on page one but rarely get quoted: AEO is your fastest win. Rewrite those pages answer-first and add the markup.
- Your sector is full of “how”, “what” and “how much” questions: professional services, membership bodies, healthcare, finance and trades all fit this. AEO deserves a regular place in the plan.
A real example
For Ali Legal, a London commercial law firm, we rebuilt the site with service pages that answer the client’s question first and carry structured data. Organic visits grew to around 1,350 a month, and visits from Google AI Overviews went from none to around 455 a month in about six months. That second number is AEO at work: the firm’s pages became the source Google’s AI summaries cited.
And GEO?
GEO, generative engine optimisation, is the third term in the set. AEO gets a page quoted as the answer to a question. GEO gets your organisation named and recommended when an AI writes its own answer, often from many sources at once. We compare that with SEO in GEO vs SEO.
If you want the three handled together, our AEO service runs in the same retainer as SEO and GEO, with one monthly report covering rankings, answers and enquiries.
Questions about AEO vs SEO: What's the Difference, and Do You Need Both?
Can you do AEO without SEO?
Rarely. Answer engines mostly choose answers from pages that are already indexed, trusted and ranking reasonably well. AEO on a site with weak SEO tends to produce well-written answers that nobody quotes.
Does AEO reduce website traffic?
It can reduce clicks for simple questions that are fully answered on the results page. In exchange your organisation is named as the source, and the visitors who do click are usually further along. For questions that need detail, being the quoted source tends to increase qualified visits.
Is AEO just featured snippets with a new name?
Featured snippets were the first answer engine, and AEO started there. It now also covers Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, voice assistants, and chat tools such as ChatGPT and Perplexity that quote and link to sources.
