How Much Does SEO Cost in the UK?
How much SEO costs in the UK, the pricing models agencies use, what drives the price, what a retainer should include and the red flags in cheap SEO.

SEO in the UK is usually bought as a monthly retainer, a fixed-price project or a one-off audit, and the price depends on how competitive your market is, how much content is needed and how much technical work the site needs. As a reference point, our own SEO retainers are fixed at £1,000, £2,000 or £3,500 + VAT a month, and our one-off 4-S digital audit is £497 + VAT. What matters more than the headline figure is what the fee actually buys in hours, pages and links.
Prices vary widely because “SEO” covers very different amounts of work. One agency’s monthly package is an automated report. Another’s is a technical lead, a writer and someone earning links every month. This guide explains the pricing models, what drives the cost and how to tell whether a quote is fair.
How is SEO priced in the UK?
Most agencies and consultants use one of four models.
| Model | What you pay for | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | A set amount of work each month: content, technical fixes, links, reporting | Businesses that rely on search for enquiries |
| Fixed-price project | A defined job with a start and end | Migrations, technical clean-ups, rewriting a set of pages |
| One-off audit | A diagnosis and a prioritised fix list | Finding out what is wrong before committing to more |
| Hourly or day rate | Time spent, logged | Small ad hoc tasks, or teams doing most of the work in-house |
For comparison, our own ad hoc work is billed at £130 per hour, and prepaid Kickass Days start at £100 per hour. Retainers are better value for ongoing SEO because the work is planned rather than squeezed in.
What drives the cost of SEO?
How competitive your searches are
Ranking a solicitor in a market town is a smaller job than ranking a solicitor in central London. The more established the sites already on page one, the more content and authority you need to compete, and the longer it takes. Our guide to how long SEO takes covers the timelines.
How many keywords and pages are in scope
An agency targeting 25 focused keywords is doing a different job from one targeting 100. Each target search needs a page that deserves to rank, which means research, writing and ongoing improvement.
The state of the website
A site with indexing errors, slow templates or a broken structure needs technical work before content will pay off. Sometimes that work belongs in a one-off project or a rebuild rather than in a monthly fee. If you are weighing up a rebuild, see how much a website costs in the UK.
Content volume
Content is usually the largest share of the cost, because good articles and service pages take research and expert input. Four well-researched articles a month is a very different budget from daily publishing.
Local or national
Local SEO adds Google Business Profile management, reviews and local citations. National SEO adds more content and more link earning. Many businesses need both.
What does an SEO retainer include?
Our three published packages show how scope scales with price. All prices exclude VAT.
| Essential | Growth | Scale | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly fee | £1,000 | £2,000 | £3,500 |
| Focused keywords | 25 | 50 | 100 |
| Articles | 4 a month | 8 a month | Daily |
| Website optimisations | Quarterly | Monthly | Fortnightly |
| Competitor research | 2 competitors | 3 competitors | 5 competitors |
| Local SEO | Yes | Yes | Yes, plus GEO and AEO |
| Strategy | Monthly reporting | Quarterly call and monthly reporting | Monthly call and reporting |
| Care plan included | No | Essential care plan | Plus care plan |
Whoever you hire, ask for the same kind of breakdown. If an agency cannot tell you how many pages it will write, how many keywords it is tracking and what technical work is included each month, you cannot compare its quote with anyone else’s.
What should you get for the money?
At any price point, a credible SEO supplier should give you:
- A technical audit at the start, with the fixes listed in priority order.
- A keyword plan based on the searches your buyers make, not the highest-volume terms. Our guide to keyword research for SMEs explains the difference.
- Named deliverables each month: pages written, pages improved, links earned.
- Access to your own data. Search Console, analytics and Google Business Profile should be in your name, with the agency as a user.
- Reporting tied to enquiries, with rankings and traffic as supporting detail.
What are the red flags in cheap SEO?
Google’s own advice on hiring an SEO is blunt: “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.” Treat these as warning signs:
- Guaranteed rankings or “page one in 30 days”.
- Hundreds of backlinks a month. Links bought at volume are a spam risk and can harm the site.
- Content produced at scale with no expert input. Google’s spam policies target pages generated in bulk to manipulate rankings.
- Reports you cannot verify, or rankings tracked for terms nobody searches.
- Accounts held by the agency. If you leave, you should keep everything.
How to set an SEO budget: a worked example
Work backwards from the value of an enquiry. The figures below are illustrative, not from a real client.
Say a new client is worth £4,000 in first-year fees and one in four enquiries becomes a client. Each enquiry is then worth £1,000 to you. A £1,000 monthly retainer needs to produce, on average, one extra enquiry a month to break even once it is working, and anything beyond that is return. Remember the three to six month run-in: budget for that period as an investment, not a cost you expect to recover in month one.
If the numbers do not work at any retainer level, put the money into the website or a smaller project first.
What you can do yourself for free
You do not need an agency for everything. Before you spend, you can:
- Set up Google Search Console and check the Page indexing report for errors.
- Complete your Google Business Profile properly. Our guide to optimising Google Business Profile walks through it.
- Rewrite your main service pages so the first paragraph answers the buyer’s question directly.
- Ask your best clients for reviews.
Where to start
If you are not sure what your site needs, a diagnosis costs less than guessing. Our 4-S digital audit reviews speed, search, sales and security and lands in five working days. If you already know you need ongoing work, our SEO service sets out exactly what each package includes, and we work with businesses across the capital from our London base.
Questions about How Much Does SEO Cost in the UK?
Is a cheap monthly SEO package worth it?
Rarely. A low monthly fee buys very little human time, so cheap packages tend to rely on automated reports, bought links or mass-produced content. Ask exactly how many hours, pages and links the fee covers and you will usually see why it is cheap.
Should I pay for SEO monthly or as a one-off project?
A one-off project suits a specific job such as a technical clean-up, a migration or rewriting a set of service pages. Ongoing rankings need ongoing work, because content, links and competitors keep changing, so most businesses that rely on search pay monthly.
How long should I commit to an SEO retainer?
Plan for at least six months before judging it, since rankings that hold usually take three to six months. Avoid long lock-in contracts and ask for monthly reporting that shows progress against enquiries as well as rankings.
