How to Appear in Google AI Overviews
How Google picks the sources for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and the practical steps that make your pages more likely to be cited, with a real example.

To appear in Google AI Overviews, a page has to be indexed and eligible for a snippet, rank reasonably well for the question, and contain a clear, self-contained answer Google can quote. There is no special tag or form. Google picks sources for AI Overviews and AI Mode from pages it already trusts, so the work is good SEO plus answer-first writing, often called AEO.
How Google chooses AI Overview sources
AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries at the top of many Google searches. AI Mode is Google’s longer, conversational version. Both write an answer and link to a handful of sources.
Google has said publicly that the same fundamentals apply as for normal search: helpful, reliable content, a crawlable site and pages that are eligible to show a snippet. In practice, the cited pages tend to have three things in common:
- They already rank for the question or closely related searches.
- They answer clearly, usually near the top of the page or under a heading that matches the question.
- They come from a source Google trusts on that topic, judged by the site’s overall quality, relevance and reputation.
AI Overviews often cite pages that rank lower than the top result, which is the opportunity: a clear answer can win the citation even when another page holds position one.
Eight steps to get cited
1. Check you are eligible
The page must be indexed and must not use nosnippet or a very low max-snippet value. Check the URL in Search Console. If Google cannot index or snippet it, nothing else matters.
2. Find the questions that trigger AI Overviews
Search the questions your buyers ask and note which ones show an AI Overview today and who it cites. Those are your targets. Questions starting “how”, “what”, “how much”, “how long” and “should I” trigger them most often.
3. Answer in the first two sentences
Put the direct answer at the top of the page or directly under the matching heading, in plain English. Then give the detail. This is the single change that most often wins a citation.
4. Use headings that match the questions
A heading like “How long does a membership CRM integration take?” followed by a direct answer is easy for Google to match to that search. “Our approach” is not.
5. Write passages that stand alone
Google lifts sentences and short passages. Name the subject in each paragraph and include the specific detail: the number, the timescale, the condition. “A WordPress care plan covers updates, backups and monitoring” works out of context. “It covers all of that” does not.
6. Show evidence
Specific figures, dates, named examples and sources make a page more useful and more quotable. Our case studies, for example, name the client, the timeline and the result.
7. Add structured data that matches the page
FAQ, HowTo, Article, Service and Organization schema help Google understand what the page is and who wrote it. It does not guarantee a citation, and it must match the visible content.
8. Keep the site fast and healthy
Slow, broken or bloated pages lose in normal search, and therefore in AI Overviews. Core Web Vitals, clean canonical tags and a sensible internal link structure all still count.
A real result
After we rebuilt Ali Legal’s website with answer-first service pages and structured data, the London law firm went from no visits from Google AI Overviews to around 455 a month in about six months. Over the same period organic search grew to about 1,350 visits a month. The two grew together, which is what you would expect: the AI Overview citations came from pages that were also climbing in normal search.
What about ChatGPT and Perplexity?
The same habits help with other AI tools, which also fetch and quote web pages. Getting your organisation recommended, rather than one page quoted, is a wider job called generative engine optimisation. We cover it in how to get recommended by ChatGPT.
Where to start
List your ten most important buyer questions, search each one and record who the AI Overview cites. Pick the three where your page ranks on page one but is not cited, and rewrite them answer-first. Check again in a month.
Or let us do it: our AEO service covers the question research, rewriting, markup and monthly tracking, in the same retainer as SEO and GEO.
Questions about How to Appear in Google AI Overviews
Is there special markup that gets you into AI Overviews?
No. Google has said there are no special requirements for AI Overviews beyond its normal guidance. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Structured data helps Google understand the page but does not guarantee a citation.
Can I opt out of AI Overviews?
You can limit how much of a page Google shows using the nosnippet and max-snippet controls, which also affect AI Overviews. Doing so usually reduces visibility in normal results too, so it is rarely worth it.
How do I see if my site appears in AI Overviews?
Search Console includes AI Overview and AI Mode traffic within normal search data rather than as a separate report. Third-party SEO tools estimate AI Overview citations and the traffic they send, and you can check your key questions by hand each month.
